Human and Animal Subjects Protection
Research involving human or animal subjects conducted by VCU faculty, staff and students must undergo institutional review to assure subjects are adequately protected. The Office of Research Subjects Protection (ORSP) facilitates the review process through providing guidance and education on research subjects protection and the VCU review process. It also coordinates the work of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subjects, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Clinical Trials Protocol Registration
The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) now requires that all clinical trials be registered on a publicly accessible internet site if you want a journal that adheres to the ICMJE policy to consider your manuscript for publication. The OSP Red Team will help ensure that your clinical trial is properly registered.

Compliance with NIH Public Access Policy
Guidance for VCU Faculty
Background and Resources
Effective April 7, 2008, recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health are subject to new reporting requirements. Principal investigators must ensure that electronic versions of all peer-reviewed manuscripts arising from NIH funding and accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008 are deposited into PubMed Central. PubMed Central is NIH’s full-text digital archive of biomedical and life science journal literature. Beginning May 25, 2008, anyone submitting NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports must include the PubMed Central
reference number when citing an article that arises from
his/her
NIH funded research.
