Databases of external funding opportunities

SPIN  (Sponsored Programs Information Network): Provides funding opportunities to the investigator and the institution. It houses up-to-date information on current national and international, government and private funding sources, including fellowships, research grants, publication support, sabbatical support, curriculum development, and more. All of the data in SPIN is obtained directly from the sponsoring agencies to ensure the integrity of the information.

SMARTS (SPIN Matching And Research Transmittal Service) is an automated daily alerts system that notifies investigators of new funding opportunities that match the keywords they have chosen in the GENIUS profiles.
Handout on Setting Up SMARTS

COS Pivot (Community of Science): Pivot combines the most comprehensive, editorially maintained database of funding opportunities worth an estimated $33 billion with a unique database of 3 million pre-populated scholar profiles. Its algorithm compiles pre-populated researcher profiles unique to VCU, and others, and matches them to current funding opportunities in the COS database. This allows users to search for a funding opportunity and instantly view matching faculty from inside or outside VCU. Conversely, a search for a scholar will link to matching funding opportunities. We strongly recommend that you create or update your COS profile/account in order to manage your searches.

Foundation Directory Online: A unique database of information on the more than 98,000 foundations, corporate donors, and grantmaking public charities in the U.S. and 1.7 million of their recent grants. To access, contact Jessica Venable.

RFP Bulletin: Receive a free roundup of recently announced Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from private, corporate, and government funding sources from the Foundation Center.

grants.gov: Searchable database and e-mail notification for all federal funding opportunities

FundSource: a free online database of research funding specific to behavioral and social science research.

Search for Funding Opportunities for Graduate Students

Graduate and Postdoctoral Extramural Support (GRAPES) Database, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA): The GRAPES database catalogs extramural funding opportunities of interest to prospective and current graduate students, students working on a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation, and postdoctoral scholars. It contains information on over 500 private and publicly funded awards, fellowships, and internships. Advanced search options allow users to refine their search by field, academic level, award type, award amount, and other criteria. GRAPES is maintained by the Graduate Outreach, Diversity and Fellowships Office. http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/grpinst.htm

Funding Opportunities, Duke University: This database allows you to search by keyword, agency, discipline, award type, and for targeted opportunities. https://researchfunding.duke.edu/search.asp

Fellowship Database, Cornell University: The Graduate School at Cornell University has developed this database to allow you to search by field, keyword, and deadline. http://www.gradschool.cornell.edu/?p=132

INTERNAL FUNDING SOURCES

Presidential Research Incentive Program (PRIP)

The goal of the PRIP is to afford all faculty internal funding opportunities to support new, emerging, or continuing research.  Where possible, the proposed work should help advance interdisciplinary research and inter-campus collaboration.  The maximum total award is $50,000; the program requires that the faculty member’s department or college provide at least 40% of the total award amount. Contingent upon funding, proposals are due April 1.  http://www.research.vcu.edu/vpr/prip/

A.D. Williams Grants and Awards

Supports biomedical research that is likely to lead to extramural funding and a sustained program of research. Research grants up to $15,000; multi-school awards up to $130,000; faculty development grants up to $5,000. http://www.vcu.edu/adw/

American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grants

Funds small research grants of up to $30,000 for junior faculty to conduct one year of basic, pre-clinical, clinical and cancer-control research studies (including but not limited to health services, psychosocial/behavioral, epidemiologic and health policy/outcome cancer research). Grants are intended for new investigators who do not have an active, nationally competitive research grant (e.g., from NIH, NSF, ACS). http://www.massey.vcu.edu/acs-institutional-research-grants.htm

Alzheimer's & Related Diseases Research Award Fund
