Below is a compilation of selected opportunities that fund graduate students. Before applying for any of these awards, familiarize yourself with university procedures for responding to solicitations. Many of these opportunities must be submitted through the Office of Sponsored Programs. You should first speak with your mentor/advisor, fiscal administrator and Office of Sponsored Programs before submitting a grant application. The Associate/Assistant Dean for Research in your School/College can also be a resource for information.

American Council of Learned Societies
Support is provided to assist graduate students in any stage of Ph.D. dissertation research or writing. Students must also be preparing a dissertation focused on a topic in the history of the visual arts of the United States.
Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery--Fellowships in American Art
Smithsonian Institution
Fellowships at the National Museum of American Art and its Renwick Gallery (in downtown Washington, D.C.) support independent research, dissertation research, or a combination of dissertation and curatorial research in the areas of art and visual culture of the United States. Pre-doctoral fellowships carry a $25,000 annual stipend.

TOEFL Small Grants Program for Doctoral Research in Second or Foreign Language Assessment

The sponsor provides support to promising students working in the area of foreign/second language assessment to facilitate the timely completion of their dissertations. American Academy in Rome
The sponsor supports independent predoctoral work at the American Academy in Rome in ancient studies, medieval studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and Modern Italian studies.
Kress Fellowship in the Art and Archaeology of Jordan
American Center of Oriental Research
Offers fellowships for pre-doctoral students completing dissertation research in an art historical topic: art history, archaeology, architectural history, and in some cases classical studies. The maximum award for six months is $18,500.
ACOR-CAORC Fellowship
American Center of Oriental Research
Provides three or more two- to six-month fellowships for MA and pre-doctoral students. Fields of study include all areas of the humanities and the natural and social sciences. Topics should contribute to scholarship in Near Eastern studies. Maximum award is $20,200.
Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships

The sponsor offers fellowships to assist graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of Ph.D. dissertation writing.
Dissertation Fellowships in Southeast European Studies
American Council of Learned Societies
Support is provided for developmental, research, and writing dissertations in Southeast European studies. The stipend will be up to $17,000.
Anthropology Internship Program
American Museum of Natural History
Offers internships for undergraduate and graduate students to work on projects relating to the collections or to the ongoing research interests of the curatorial staff in the museum or in the field.
Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship
American Musicological Society
Fellowships are available that are intended to increase the presence of minority scholars and teachers in musicology. The fellowship will support one year of graduate work for a member of a group historically underrepresented in the discipline.
Alvin H. Johnson Dissertation Fellowships
American Musicological Society
Dissertation-Year Fellowships are available to doctoral students at North American universities, who have completed all formal degree requirements except the dissertation. Winners receive a twelve-month stipend of $17,000.

Public Policy Internship Program

Minority Fellowship Program

The program seeks to attract talented students interested in mental illness and mental disorders issues and to facilitate their placement, work, and success in graduate programs throughout the U.S. The program is primarily designed for minority students entering a doctoral program in sociology for the first time or for those who are in the early stages of their graduate programs.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program

The sponsor supports fellowships for eligible students of superior ability, selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise, to undertake graduate study in selected fields in the arts, humanities, and social sciences leading to a doctoral degree or to a master's degree in those fields in which the master's degree is the terminal highest degree awarded in the selected field of study at accredited institutions of higher education.

The AHRQ dissertation award supports dissertation research costs for students in accredited research doctoral programs in the United States. Dissertation applications must focus on methodological and research topics that address the mission and research interests of the sponsor.
Lung Health Dissertation Grants
American Lung Association
Support is provided for doctoral research training for dissertation research on issues relevant to lung disease.
Medical Student Summer Fellowships
American Parkinson Disease Association
The sponsor provides support to enable a medical student to perform active supervised laboratory or clinical research designed to clarify our understanding of Parkinson's disease, its nature, manifestations, etiology or treatment.
Doctoral Dissertation Award for Arthritis Health Professionals
Arthritis Foundation
The sponsor provides support for one or two years of salary and/or research support. The research project must be related to arthritis management and/or comprehensive patient care in rheumatology practice, research or education. Eligible applicants are pre-doctoral students entering the research phase of their programs. The award is for $30,000 per year.
Rita Schaffer Young Investigator Award
Biomedical Engineering Society
The Young Investigator Award is offered each year by the Biomedical Engineering Society to stimulate research careers in biomedical engineering. Candidates must be within 5 years of receiving his/her highest degree.
Student Awards

Up to five graduate student awards for outstanding biomedical engineering research and/or design projects. The awards consist of a certificate, a stipend of $600, registration for the BMES Annual Fall Meeting, and travel expenses up to $400.

Three-month fellowships in the amount of $3,000 offer qualified individuals the opportunity to develop expertise in epilepsy research. Eligible applicants must be enrolled in an appropriate undergraduate or graduate program in the behavioral sciences and studying in a field relevant to epilepsy research or clinical care.
Health Sciences Student Fellowships
Epilepsy Foundation of America
Student fellowship programs offer qualified individuals the opportunity to develop expertise in epilepsy research through a three-month training experience and involvement in a research project. The Health Sciences Student Fellowship is geared toward individuals who are enrolled in medical school, a doctoral program, or other graduate program.
FCER Fellowship Program
Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research
The intent of the program is to increase the numbers of trained chiropractic researchers. Priority will be given to applicants pursuing the doctorate degree [e.g. Ph.D., D.Sc., Dr. P.H.] or Masters of Public Health degree. Other Masters degree candidates may be considered for fellowship support contingent upon the availability of funds. Priority will be given to applicants enrolled in graduate programs which emphasize clinical research training.

The SIIM Research and Development Committee offers a $20,000 grant targeted at providing training opportunities in the field of imaging informatics for students and imaging informatics professionals.
General AFAR Grants
American Foundation for Aging Research
Awards are open to students who are in bachelors, masters, Ph.D., MD, DDS, DVM degree programs and are conducting research at an institution in the United States. AFAR offers $500 for undergraduates, $1,000 for graduates. These awards are renewable each semester.
Student Traineeships
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Student traineeships are offered to introduce students to research related to CF. Applicants must be students in or about to enter a doctoral program (MD, PhD, or MD/PhD). Senior-level undergraduates planning to pursue graduate training may also apply. Each applicant must work with a faculty sponsor on a research project related to CF.
DeBakey Scholars Program

Maximum grants of $1,500 enable predoctoral and recent postdoctoral investigators to study any of the scientific collections at the American Museum.
Dissertation Fellowships and Research Grants
Guggenheim (Harry Frank) Foundation
Support is provided for individuals to complete the writing of their doctoral dissertations in any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that will increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence, aggression, and dominance. Ten or more dissertation fellowships in the amount of $20,000 are awarded each year. Research Awards normally range from $15,000 to $40,000 per year for one or two years.

The College Scholarship Program is available on a competitive basis to community college, four-year college, and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $5,000.

The John Hope Franklin Dissertation Fellowship
American Philosophical Society
This fellowship is designed to support an outstanding doctoral student at an American university who is conducting dissertation research. Supports Ph.D. projects of minority students of great promise (particularly African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans) as well as other talented students who have a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities and enlarging minority representation in academia.
Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants

Grants are awarded to doctoral candidates at U.S. institutions to improve the quality of dissertation research. Grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. In general, grants are awarded for up to twenty four months.

Predoctoral Fellowships

Fellowships of $25,000, plus allowances, support up to twelve months of in-residence research in biological and physical sciences, and arts, humanities, history, and social sciences. Eligible applicants are doctoral candidates who have completed all coursework and exams and must be engaged in dissertation research.
Graduate Student Fellowships

The sponsor provides support to allow students to conduct in-residence research for ten-week periods in association with Smithsonian research staff members. Applicants must be formally enrolled in a graduate program of study. The stipend is $5,500.
Clara Mayo Grants
Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues
The sponsor provides up to $1,000 to support masters' theses or pre-dissertation research on aspects of sexism, racism, or prejudice, with preference given to students enrolled in a terminal master's program.
Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant Program

Support is provided to assist Ph.D. candidates in completing their research and dissertations on housing and urban development issues. The maximum amount to be awarded to a Ph.D. candidate is $25,000. The maximum grant period is twenty-four months.

The sponsor provides support to persons interested in pursuing a Master's, Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree in a field of study which is directly related to transportation. Annually, the sponsor covers a maximum of $10,000 in tuition and fees.
