Summer Research Institute

Each year the Office of the Vice President for Research solicits applications from VCU faculty for participation in Oxford’s Harris Manchester College Summer Research Institute. The Summer Research Institute is an opportunity for faculty to spend a week away from the usual routine to focus on a scholarly area of interest. The Institute draws scholars with diverse interests from many U.S. universities. Your time is your own for study and writing, as well as taking advantage of cultural activities offered at Oxford University and the surrounding area. The Institute is generally scheduled for a week in late June/early July.
The week includes:
- Designation as a Visiting Fellow of Harris Manchester College
- Access to Harris Manchester College computer lab & free in-room internet hook-up
- Access to all libraries at Oxford University
- Private room w/shared bath at Harris Manchester College
- 3 meals a day where you interact with other scholars attending the Summer Institute and staff from Harris-Manchester
- Participation in the Institute and travel expenses paid by VCU
ELIGIBILITY:
This opportunity is open to three VCU faculty members. One position will be open to a member of VCU’s Research Advisory Council, Conflict of Interest Committee, Institutional Review Boards, Institutional and Animal Care and Use Committee, Biosafety Committee, or the VP’s Research Deans Advisory Committee, who proposes a study that focuses on the responsible conduct of research. The other two positions will be open to any VCU faculty members whose research or scholarly project will benefit from the unique resources available at Oxford University. Application criteria :
Submission of the application form (see below), a CV or CV summary not to exceed 3 pages, a statement from the Department Chair endorsing the application, and a brief (no longer than 2 single-spaced pages, at least 10-point font) proposal that meets the following criteria:
- Includes discussion of a plan for sharing project outcomes with VCU faculty and students
- Includes description of a project that meets one of the following:
- A short study on the responsible conduct of research (open only to members of VCU’s IRB, IACUC, RAC, COI, Biosafety, or Research Deans Advisory Committees).
- The discussion must include how the project will be used to inform own and others research and faculty development in responsible conduct of research;
OR
- A scholarly project that takes advantage of the unique resources available at Oxford (e.g., academic or research facilities, Oxford scholars, etc.) --- this is open to any VCU faculty member.
- The discussion must include a plan for how this project will be used to further the faculty member’s research/scholarship and/or teaching, and how it will help further the relationship between VCU and Oxford University; and
- The application must include a letter of support from the relevant Oxford contact/department
