Discovering VCU's Research Resources
VCU has a variety of resources on both campus designed to support your research endeavors. This workshop will provide grantwriters with a brief introduction to the offices that assist in engaging with the community, building collaborations, securing equipment, grant writing and reviewing proposal drafts, grant submission, working with the IRB, and commercialization.
Funding Agency Highlights
Every year, the Office of Research hosts a day of lecture and discussion featuring personnel from Federal funding agencies. Topics include mission, important programs, funding outlook, grantwriting tips, and suggestions for reviewers.
Foundations Workshop
Staff from VCU's Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations and the Office of Sponsored Programs will present a workshop on grantseeking from corporations and foundations. The workshop will include an overview of the private fundseeking process at VCU; a discussion of types of foundation and corporate funders and their decision-making processes; tips on identifying the right funder for your project; a demonstration of primary resources for finding funders; tips on preparing a good Letter of Intent/Inquiry (LOI), budget, and proposal for a foundation or corporation; a brief discussion on how private grantseeking differs from governmental grantseeking; and the process for submitting your proposal.
REDCap Intro
REDCap is a secure, web-based application designed to support web-based data capture, including surveys. Although it was originally designed for research studies, REDCap can also be used for collecting and managing data for operational support purposes. This Level 1 introduces creation and design of data collection instruments, survey invitation and response management. It also provides an overview of data reporting and exporting.

Community Engaged Research: Challenges and Solutions
Understanding how to work with community stakeholders in meaningful, reciprocal ways requires particular skills. This workshop will explore the common challenges researchers face when working with communities, and strategic approach that may be taken for engagement. Researchers and their community partners are encouraged to attend this seminar.
Managing Interdisciplinary Research: Opportunities and Challenges
Collaborative and interdisciplinary research is encouraged by funders, but how do you effectively work across units? In a panel discussion, researchers who have been successful with collaborations will discuss the benefits, challenges, and logistics of working in partnerships.
Getting the Most out of Mentoring
Effective mentoring relationships is a two way street. Mentees must seek out the right mentor, clarify their needs, and have the skills to successfully engage. Mentors must be good communicators, address stumbling blocks, and recognize the role of learning. This workshop will discuss how to maximize and promote a working mentoring relationship, as well as the transition from mentee to mentor. Faculty, postdocs, and graduate students are encouraged to attend.
